Animal Testing Should Be Banned - 1151 Words

Less than 2% of human illnesses are ever seen in animals. Over 98% never affect animals. 92% of drugs passed by animal tests fail when first tried on humans because they’re useless, dangerous or both. Humans and animals are very similar to one another. Like humans they have similar systems in the body and at times it tends to react the same a human would. The animals that are used in research are mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, primates, dogs, cats, cows, fish, and birds. Almost all of these animals are used to try to make human life better and to progress in the world of medicine. The remaining animals are used as test dummies for all other products. Different tests are done on the animals in order to see the effect it will have on humans. The Draize eye test is done for eye irritation this test was created by John Draize, a scientist who works for the United States Food and Drug Administration. During this test a substance will be placed in a rabbit’s eye. Developed in the 1940s, these tests involve holding rabbits in full body restraints so that chemicals can be put in their eye or spread on their shaved and scraped skin. The restraint stops these animals from touching their eyes or back to relieve the discomfort. The Draize test is used to measure irritation and caused to the eye or skin. With this test it can cause bleeding, ulcers, and blindness for up to three weeks. Rabbits are used for the Drazie test because they are very small and gentle and easily to handled. They are also very cheap to maintain. Rabbits also have no tear ducts unlike humans, they can t cry out harmful substances from their eye. That means in th e Draize eye test the rabbit s eye is exposed to more of the test chemical for a longer time frame which is the main reasons why rabbits are chosen for this procedure. At the end of the tests it is most likely that the rabbits will be killed. There is another test that is done to determine acute toxicity, which is done to calculate the danger
